Legend says he heard learned of the execution of Queen Anne Boleyn while he was in a tennis match at Hampton Court Palace.

In this overhauling, a new tile floor was put in, galleries were remodeled and various repairs were made to the roof. New nets, curtains and velvet cushions for the spectator's seats were also installed. After that, the court has undergone little alteration. However, in 1975 sodium halide lighting was installed, making the court one of the best lit in Great Britain and possibly in the whole world. The court is the oldest tennis court still in use in the world.
